Forty-six air monitoring stations were grouped into 6 rural and urban regional areas. Linear regression models examined pollution levels in association with rural and urban regions and meteorological covariates. Results: Findings show that daily mean pollutant levels in the rural Upper Hunter were the highest of all regions, and were significantly higher than metropolitan Sydney, with and without control for weather conditions, for every pollutant. For example, daily mean PM2.5 was 8.64 µg/m3 in the rural Upper Hunter, compared to 7.23 μg/m3 in metropolitan Sydney. Conclusions: Results highlight the need to consider both urban and rural sources of pollution in air quality studies, and appropriate policy steps to address likely rural air pollution from coal mining.]]> Thu 21 Jul 2022 09:48:20 AEST ]]> Australian Coal Mining industry (1797- 1820s): beginnings, history and the vanished industrial heritage of early Newcastle https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:26030 Thu 12 Apr 2018 14:04:58 AEST ]]> Identifying safety culture and safety climate variables that predict reported risk-taking among Australian coal miners: an exploratory longitudinal study https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:35859 Thu 10 Nov 2022 09:31:03 AEDT ]]> Coalmining and manufacturing in Newcastle, 1797-1900 https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:24328 Thu 08 Jun 2017 09:31:12 AEST ]]> Development of combustion technology for methane emitted from coal-mine ventilation air systems https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:31342 Sat 24 Mar 2018 08:44:37 AEDT ]]> Not just a coalmine: shifting grounds of community opposition to coal mining in Southeastern Australia https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:7175 Sat 24 Mar 2018 08:34:17 AEDT ]]> The coalminers of Queensland: a narrative history of the Queensland Colliery Employees Union, volume 2: the Pete Thomas essays (book review) https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:7967 Sat 24 Mar 2018 08:33:39 AEDT ]]> The health of Hunter Valley communities in proximity to coal mining and power generation, general practice data, 1998-2010 https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:17091 Sat 24 Mar 2018 08:05:37 AEDT ]]> Compression-induced saturation in coal mine spoil piles https://ogma.newcastle.edu.au/vital/access/ /manager/Repository/uon:17865 r) at constant water content. In this study, a typical spoil derived from Permian-aged sandstones and mudrocks, is subjected to stresses up to 20 MPa, with the corresponding changes in degree of saturation and suction measured. The results show that loose spoil with a water content of around 12% (Sr=25%) will collapse to become saturated under a stress of 7 MPa. In contrast, loose spoil with a higher water content of around 16% will collapse to become saturated under a stress of only 1.5 MPa. From these results, a phenomenon is identified whereby spoil in the seepage and capillary zones at the base of very high spoil piles can collapse to a state of saturation. A discussion is provided on the consequences of this for the matric suction and unsaturated shear strength of these spoil materials, which constitute the foundation layer of the pile.]]> Sat 24 Mar 2018 08:03:29 AEDT ]]> Discussion of 'Geomechanical modeling of the nucleation process of Australia's 1989 M5.6 Newcastle earthquake' by C.D.
